While there is no way of knowing the actual numbers, historians estimate 15 to 25 percent of the colonists remained loyal to the British Crown; these became known as “loyalists” (or “Tories,” or “King's men”). Loyalists were typically older, less willing to break with old loyalties, often connected to the Anglican church , and included many established merchants with business connections across the empire, for example Thomas Hutchinson of Boston.
