Seek help
Most employers offer confidential mental health resources as part of an employee assistance plan, says Taylor who advises people take full advantage of the private service. Alternatively, speak to your family doctor about what you’re feeling. And educate yourself about the varieties of treatments out there. Talk therapy and medications aren’t the only treatments. There are a host of alternative therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy (mentioned above) and acupuncture that may ultimately benefit you in the long run.

Like any teenager, I was so excited to  move out of my parents house, go away to college and to taste the sweet freedom of “adulthood.” However, within, oh, two days of moving into my dorm room, I was overcome with the most visceral depression I’d ever felt in my young life — I missed my mommy. I had never been away from her, and of course took her utterly for granted, but the minute her constant presence was gone from my day to day, I realized just how much I depended on her for comfort and support. Those first few months of college were really hard for both of us, and on one of the weekends when she came to visit, I bought the Simon & Garfunkel soundtrack for “The Graduate.” I played this song in particular every time I was overcome with homesickness, and still find that it comforts me on days when I’m really depressed. –  Amelia McDonell-Parry

You're suddenly anxious, sweating, and nauseous. These are classic symptoms of a panic attack, but they are also heart attack symptoms. If these early heart symptoms are followed up with shortness of breath (though you haven't moved a muscle), extreme fatigue, or accompanied by pain, fullness, or aching in the your chest that may (or may not) radiate to the back, shoulders, arm, neck, or throat, then get to an emergency room immediately. Waiting more than five minutes to take action could change your chances of survival. In fact, those who arrive at the hospital within an hour of heart attack symptoms starting have better survival rate than those who wait.

As painful as it is, depression can be come comfortable in a “devil you know” kind of way. You know what to expect, for the most part. You know the pain, you’re in the pain, you can predict that tomorrow will be more of the same. The idea of stepping out of this comfort zone can be quite anxiety provoking. Steven Hayes , a psychologist whose work I admire said, “If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’re always going to get what you’ve always gotten.” So, if you find you’re able to do something (even very slightly) different, congratulate yourself. There’s a good chance whatever you’re experiencing will come with anxiety, because anxiety accompanies uncertainty. Anxiety may be telling you you’re stepping out of the familiar routine of depression, so acknowledge your courage and try to bring such experiences forward in your journey.
